Shaw Media, owner of the Creston News Advertiser, has purchased the Adair County Free Press and Fontanelle Observer from Carroll-based Herald Publishing, both parties announced today. The sale will be effective immediately.
Prior to Herald Publishing owning the Adair County Free Press, the Sidey family had a long-storied tradition of covering Adair County.
The Creston News Advertiser printed the Adair County Free Press and Fontanelle Observer for many years at its print plant. The CNA has also continued to cover the area in news and sports for several years, and now will do it locally.
CNA Publisher Rich Paulsen will also serve as publisher of the Adair County Free Press and Fontanelle Observer.
“We are looking forward to serving the Greenfield and Fontanelle communities,” Paulsen said. “It will be a pleasure to work with the folks in Adair County. We look to continue the outstanding tradition of journalism in the newspaper.”
“Geographically, and based on current trade and shopping and economic patterns, it is clear Creston is the commercial center for this region, so it makes sense for the newspapers here, in Greenfield and Fontanelle, to be connected to Creston,” said Douglas Burns, co-owner of Carroll-based Herald Publishing, owners of the Observer and Free Press for the past three years.
“Like our newspaper group, the Shaw organization has deep family roots. The Shaw family is widely respected in newspaper circles, as is the Sidey family, whose heritage always will be a part of newspapering in Adair County. We look forward to being good neighbors with Shaw as we continue to operate our newspapers in Guthrie, Greene and Carroll counties. We have made many good friends here in Adair County. The reality for us, though, is that with recent substantial economic growth in Carroll, our hometown, we have decided to dedicate more time and resources to coverage and support of our burgeoning area of west-central Iowa.”
Shaw Media is the third-oldest continuously owned and operated newspaper company in the nation. In addition to the Creston News Advertiser and Osceola Sentinel-Tribune, it operates newspaper properties in Newton, Iowa, suburban Chicago and northern Illinois.
